Aeropress

An innovative device invented in 2005, the Aeropress combines impregnation with forced sinking using air pressure. Madness recommends using the “inverted” method, which is described here.

TOOLS

  • Aeropress filter
  • Coffee
  • Windmill
  • Scale
  • Minute
  • Wooden spoon

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Bring approximately 160 grams of water to a boil. Load a filter into the lid of the Aeropress.
  • Weigh 18 grams of coffee and grind it to a fine grind, somewhere between the drip and the espresso.
  • Assemble your Aeropress upside down (flare finish, inverted numbers) and place it on a tared scale. Make sure the plunger is marked 3.
  • Put some hot water on the filter to help it adhere to the lid, as it will invert it to hold it together.
  • Add the coffee to the Aeropress.
  • Add 160g of water making sure all the coffee is evenly saturated.
  • Stir gently 6 times and then put the lid on top.
  • Let it sit for two minutes.
  • Flip the entire assembly over in one smooth, controlled motion to sit on top of a mug or other container with a smaller rim diameter than the Aeropress flared section. The Aeropress is now on the right track.
  • Begin applying downward pressure to the top section of the Aeropress. Be careful when reaching the bottom, as the last liquid that comes out of the chamber is followed by a hiss of steam: if you hold the Aeropress to the infusion container by the domed rim (as we usually do), it may scald your fingers. .
  • Your coffee is now brewed and you can now remove the Aeropress.
